FEDERAL ELECTION COMMISSION LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION OF INDEPENDENT COUNSEL ROBERT RAY

[ Judicial Watch ]

*** Judicial Watch Complaint Sparks Probe of Ray's Illegal Run for NJ Seat in U.S. Senate

*** Ray's Final Report On Clinton Investigations Challenged By Judicial Watch

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest law firm that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, revealed today that the Federal Election Commission has commenced an investigation of Independent Counsel Robert W. Ray based on a February 21, 2002 complaint by Judicial Watch.

Judicial Watch requested a thorough investigation of Ray based on confirmed reports of his conduct in running as the Republican candidate for one of New Jersey's seats in the U.S. Senate, while simultaneously serving as Independent Counsel. Ray has met with New Jersey Republican leaders and has spoken at fundraising events. At a minimum, Ray's actions are a gross violation of ethics regulations, as well as a violation of law.

A copy of the FEC's letter confirming the investigation of Mr. Ray can be found at http://www.judicialwatch.org/cases/84/fecltr.gif.

"Independent Counsel Ray's political ambitions and desire for the power of a U.S. Senate seat call the OIC's investigative process and prosecutorial decisions of his entire effort into question. Judicial Watch will formally challenge his findings," stated Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman. "There's now reason to believe that portions of Ray's final report were falsified in the name of political expediency. As just one example, Ray finds no substantial evidence that White House contractors were threatened to keep quiet about 1.8 million incriminating e-mail about the Clinton scandals. This is simply false and Judicial Watch will prove it to the three judge panel that oversees Ray," Klayman added.

McCains Top Adviser Defects to Dems

[ The Federal Observer ]

Republican Sen. John McCain's top political strategist, John Weaver, has defected to the Democratic Party, denouncing the GOP as "the party of the corporate skybox elite."

"Weaver left McCain's payroll last year but still advises him on campaign finance and patients' rights," said the Wall Street Journal, which reported Weaver's switch Friday.

While continuing to advise McCain as a Democrat, Weaver also meets regularly with aides to top party leaders Tom Daschle and Dick Gephardt, the paper said.

During the 2000 Republican presidential primary battle between McCain and President Bush, Weaver was credited with the idea of having the Arizona senator denounce Christian fundamentalist leaders Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson as "evil."

"To stand up and take on the forces of evil - that is my job and I can't steer the Republican Party if those two individuals have the influence that they have on the party today," McCain said in February 2000.

Of his years advising Republicans since the Reagan era, Weaver told the Journal, "I certainly have a lot of penance to do."

Hittin' 'Em Where They Live: In the Wallet

[ UPI's "Capital Comment," / GOP N&V ]

"The directors of Phillips International, Inc.'s Political Action Committee -- Phillips PAC -- passed by unanimous vote a resolution barring contributions to any candidate who supported the McCain-Feingold or Shays-Meehan campaign finance bills. Phillips is a private publishing company based in Potomac, Md., which provides a wide range of products and services for the investment and health marketplaces. The Phillips PAC leadership expressed concerns about the campaign-finance reform bill's effect on free speech and citizen participation in the political process. They agreed with analysts who say the measure is an unconstitutional infringement of the First Amendment's guarantees on freedom of speech."

Is There a GOP Spine in the House . . . er, Senate?

[ Columnist Bob Novak, 3/11/02 / GOP N&V ]

"Democratic leaders are demonstrating their commitment to abortion-friendly federal appellate judges by refusing to permit the Senate to vote on a highly qualified nominee. The remaining question is whether Republicans have the courage to implement secret retaliatory plans to effectively close down the Senate. Those plans are privately called 'going nuclear.' A 'tactical' nuclear response would be to obstruct Senate committee action. The 'strategic' approach would be to halt action on the Senate floor through parliamentary mischief. The White House has given a green light to whatever Senate Republican Leader Trent Lott does. But do Republican senators have the stomach to confront the Democrats?"

TCN comment: The answer is "No, not one."

Hillary's Support Grows

[ CNSNews.com ]

"A new poll shows Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) is the second choice among Democrats - right behind Al Gore - to be the party's 2004 presidential nominee. According to the new Zogby America poll, 22 percent of likely Democratic voters supported Hillary, compared with the 27 percent who backed Al Gore. The poll notes that Hillary Clinton is closing the gap with Gore. In August, Gore led Clinton 40-24 percent. The latest Zogby America poll shows Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) running third behind Hillary Clinton with 8 percent support, followed by House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt and former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley, both with 7 percent support.

TCN Comment: Please note that this is "among Democrats" Those are the intelligent folks that couldn't follow an arrow one inch across a ballot in Palm Beach County Florida in 2000. It doesn't appear that the media attention has done much to help them with their handicap.

Enclosed is my 2001 tax return & payment. Please take note of the attached article from USA Today newspaper.

In the article, you will see that the Pentagon is paying $171.50 for hammers and NASA has paid $600.00 for a toilet seat. Please find enclosed four toilet seats (value $2400) and six hammers (value $1029). This brings my total payment to $3429.00.

Please note the overpayment of $22.00 and apply it to the "Presidential Election Fund," as noted on my return. Might I suggest you the send the above mentioned fund a 1.5 inch screw." (See attached article...HUD paid $22.00 for a 1.5 inch phillips head screw.)
