"The failure to teach the presence of absolutes and truth in our schools is what is primarily responsible for the education disaster that nearly everyone now sees or forecasts for the near future.... If a philosophy and worldview once produced generations of young people who could read, write, and think while resisting, for the most part, the temptation to engage in anti-social and personally corrupting behavior, why doesn't it make sense to return to that philosophy and reject the one that has brought us crack cocaine in the school yard and drive-by shootings at the playground?" --Cal Thomas
"The social chaos seen in other countries such as sabotage, guerrilla bands and political assassinations has yet to emerge in our country. Because of that, we Americans have little appreciation and even indifference to the attack on the laws, customs and institutions that create the fabric for a free society. The Clinton/Gore administration has ratcheted up to an unprecedented level the attack on the rule of law and constitutional government; what's worse is that we have applauded and supported the attack." --Walter Williams
"You and I are told increasingly that we have to choose between a left or right, but I would like to suggest that there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down -- up to man's age-old dream--the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order -- or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism, and regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course." -Ronald Reagan
"YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT THOSE LITTLE OLD LADIES IN PALM BEACH CAN PLAY 15 BINGO CARDS SIMULTANEOUSLY - BUT CAN'T PUNCH A BALLOT?" - A little old lady and life-long Democrat
In the first presidential debate, you were asked the following question by Jim Lehrer:
"Vice President Gore, if President Milosevic of Yugoslavia refuses to accept the election results and leave office, what action, if any, should the United States take to get him out of there?"
You responded:
"Well, Milosevic has lost the election. His opponent, Kostunica, has won the election. I think we should support the people of Yugoslavia and put pressure in every way possible to recognize the lawful outcome of the election. The people of Serbia have acted very bravely in kicking this guy out of office. Make no mistake about it: We should do everything we can to see that the will of the Serbian people, expressed in this extraordinary election, is done. And I hope that he'll be out of office very shortly."
Our question to you Mr. Gore:
If you refuse to accept the election results and leave office, what action should we, the citizens of the United States, take to get you "out of office very shortly"?
[ the Federalist ]
To understand the most salient issues of Gore's Florida campaign strategy, our staff of seasoned political analysts have assembled the following talking points.
1. We have a Constitution -- or did before the Clinton-Gore era -- clearly defining such things as presidential elections via the Electoral College. Let's adhere to it now -- or revert back to the Articles of Confederation. (Now there is an interesting concept!)
2. The underlying assumption in national elections is that the aggregate flaw of vote tallies across the nation -- or in any state -- is randomly, thus equally, flawed. Thus, selecting a few heavily Democrat voter regions for a recount, and then a "hand count," skews the randomness of such flaws, adulterating the accuracy of the entire election process.
The Palm Beach hand count by Democrats in four Florida counties violates the 14th Amendment's provisions for equal treatment of voters.
"Our democratic process calls for a vote on Election Day," declared the Bush campaign. "It does not call for us to continue voting until someone likes the outcome." Mr. Bush won the Florida election. He won the recount mandated by Florida law. Let's move on.
3. Last week, we concluded that Janet Reno's sudden conversion to federalism, demonstrated by her assertion that it was important to "adhere to the principles of federalism," exposed the Demos' strategy to let their ilk in the state courts of Florida do the dirty work of contesting the election results. Sure enough, the unified mantra of the Demos is that "all parties should step back and let the Florida courts handle the case."
Indeed, a federal judge -- a Clinton appointee -- rejected the Bush campaign's arguments against successive recounts, insisting the case belongs in the state courts.
But Florida state law is clear in this matter. For the record, the most relevant Florida case law on ballot confusion states that such confusion does not nullify an election because there is a reasonable expectation that the voter can demonstrate "the degree of care commensurate with the solemnity of the occasion." In other words, if a voter is too stupid or careless to vote correctly, that does not a new election make.
Further, Florida's Secretary of State Katherine Harris intends to enforce her state's laws, which stipulate that Florida's 67 counties have until 5:00 PM, November 14, 2000, to deliver their certified vote totals to her office. Florida Title IX, Chapter 102, Section 111 provides, in relevant part, that: "If a|I of the county returns are not received by the Department of State by 5 P.M. of the seventh day following an election, all missing counties shall be ignored, and the results shown by the returns on file shall be certified."
Of course, the "Gorons" intend to stall the process with their "Ebonics Ballot" legal challenge....
4. Fact: Gore's campaign knows Florida is lost, and we believe they will ultimately concede the election. But the longer they can "justifiably" delay their concession, the greater damage they, and surrogates like Jesse Jackson, can inflict on the legitimate standing of Mr. Bush's presidency. Declaring all manner of fraud, deception and injustice is calculated to accomplish two goals -- sabotage the Bush presidency's credibility and position Gore for 2004.
The danger of Gore's endgame is that political stability, like market stability, is about 10% substance and 90% fragrance. That is to say, stability is perception dependent. Gore is toying with this perception for no reason other than personal political gain, and it's a perilous sport.
5. Both of the nation's leading leftist editorial pages, the Washington Post and the New York Times, have chastised Gore for not conceding. Both sets of their editors know the potential danger of Gore's play for power, and his colleagues are also beginning to complain.
"I want Al Gore to win the election, but more than that, I want somebody to win this election," said Demo Senator Robert G. Torricelli. Former Arkansas Senator Dale Bumpers added, "There might come a time when the vice president would be well served to say the country's interest is more important than the interests of one person or political party, and go ahead and concede." Gore's primary opponent, Bill Bradley, says, "When the votes are counted, that should be it. It is a perilous course to try to delay in the expectation that things will be turned around by lawyers. Unless there is something fraudulent or a flagrant violation of law, this should end on Nov. 17."
6. Regardless of the facts, public opinion in this matter will be shaped, largely, by Gore's TV talkingheads. Gore can count on their influence to stir his pot of dissention. One should not underestimate the potential calamity such dissention can ferment.
Occasionally, The Federalist Editorial Board hears from a reader who takes exception to our language castigating Clinton-Gore and their ilk for being the extreme leftists they are. If one ever had a doubt about how reckless and dangerous these outlaws really are, the current attempt to steal the presidential election should squelch that doubt.
Finally, in the words of William Bennett, himself a former Democrat: "Al Gore's transparent efforts to overturn election results that are unfavorable to him are doing terrible and lasting damage to the nation he has spent most of his adult life hoping to lead. As everybody knows by now, George W. Bush last week won the unofficial recount in Florida. [Tuesday], Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris is scheduled to announce the official ballot results from all 67 counties; by Friday the state will tabulate ballots cast by Floridians overseas. The evidence indicated that last Tuesday's results would be upheld.
"But as everybody also knows, the Gore campaign began a massive campaign to subvert this outcome, including its most recent effort to insist on a manual recount in four predominantly Democratic counties... The end game is clear: to throw sand in the machinery of democracy and destabilize American presidential politics. I hope, and still believe, these efforts will fail. But whether they do or not, Mr. Gore is well on his way to earning the scorn of his countrymen and a harsh verdict from history."
