"It is not a party for [the Gores]. It is a 'working dinner' with them." -ABC News White House correspondent John Cochran on the dinner party he hosted for Tipper and Al. ABC is footing the bill. **No Republican contenders made the guest list, but I guess that we knew that ABC had no plan to "work" with any Republican candidates, didn't we?
The Clinton administration has contended all along that the Chinese take-over of the Panama Canal is no threat to US security. I am sure this has nothing to do with how deep he is into their pockets, but the Pentagon disagrees with his conclusions and so does the Chinese Army. Either they haven't received adequate compensation or they are being more honest. (Could we really be to the place where Chinese government officials are to be believed over our own president? God help us!)
The released portions of the three-page report by the Pentagon contradict claims by administration officials that the presence of the People's Republic of China near the strategic waterway poses no threat to U.S. national security interests.
"Hutchison [Whampoa Ltd.'s] containerized shipping facilities in the Panama Canal, as well as the Bahamas, could provide a conduit for illegal shipments of technology or prohibited items from the West to the PRC, or facilitate the movement of arms and other prohibited items into the Americas," according to a declassified report by the U.S. Southern Command's Joint Intelligence Center.
This combined with statements coming out of China this week draw a serious picture. Hong Kong's Cheng Ming newspaper quoted Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian as saying war with the United States is inevitable.
"Seen from the changes in the world situation and the United States' hegemonic strategy for creating monopolarity, war is inevitable," Mr. Chi told a military conference in early December.
"We cannot avoid it," he was quoted in the newspaper as saying. "The issue is that the Chinese armed forces must control the initiative in this war.
"...We must be prepared to fight for one year, two years, three years or even longer."
There is only one candidate in the presidential race that has been aware of the damage done to US security by giving away the canal, Alan Keyes. Alan has publicly stated that the US must correct our error and take back the canal.
TCN agrees.
The latest issue of Animal Times, the quarterly publication of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, announces the group's grants to companies developing human embryo testing as one of the alternatives to the use of rats and other beasts in product safety tests.
"PETA has given $250,000 to assist in the validation of non-animal test methods to replace existing animal tests," an article in the Winter 1999 edition of the journal says. "PETA awarded a $200,000 grant to the Institute for In Vitro Science (IIVS) in Maryland to support a replacement for the use of rats in lethal dose poisoning tests for chemicals, household products and pharmaceuticals."
PETA describes itself as "an international non-profit animal protection organization with more than 600,000 members dedicated to establishing the rights of all animals." Prominent members include former Beatle Paul McCartney. Other celebrity supporters include "Politically Incorrect" host Bill Maher, actress Alicia Silverstone, actress Pamela Sue Anderson, and actor Steven Seagal, who said, according to the organization's magazine: "We have to view all life as equal."
But it's not PETA, alone, promoting an agenda of finding any alternative to animal testing -- even if it means experiments using human embryos. In fact, since 1993, the federal government has joined the movement with the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Validation of Alternative Methods ICCVAM.
The offshoot of the National Institutes of Health unites representatives from 14 federal agencies and programs that generate or use information from toxicological test methods to support human health or environmental risk assessments.
The fund's corporate benefactors include: Avon Products Inc., Fabergé, L'Oréal, Pfizer Ltd, Proctor and Gamble Ltd., Safeway Stores and SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare. Corporate sponsors and supporters include Gillette, Warner Lambert UK Ltd, Woolworths, Colgate- Palmolive Ltd., Johnson & Johnson Ltd. and Johnson Wax Ltd.
Interestingly, Proctor and Gamble has been a frequent target of PETA for its use of animal tests.
A spokeswoman for PETA found no contradiction in its support of organizations involved in human and animal embryo tests.
"I didn't know any commercial firms were doing human
embryo tests," said Mary Beth Swetland, director of
research and investigation for the group. "But, no, I
don't see any problem with it."

We're not sure what the liberal media's definition for "negative" advertising might be, but we have one we think is appropriate: "Negative" advertising is advertising, the goal of which is to obscure the truth or misinform the voter. That is the only "negative" advertising that we can think of.
The concept that it is wrong or "dirty politics" to point out the errors and inconsistencies of one's opponent is simply foolish. The only voter that has a chance of intentionally voting for the best man is the voter that has the facts. Inconsistencies and downright lies are important facts. American people have had enough of dishonest political machines and politicians that think they are not accountable for their statements and their actions. If you are seeking a national political office, then it is entirely appropriate that your past actions and voting record be nationally publicized.
Who is it that doesn't want their record published? Who is it that is trying to hide the truth? Those who want the voters to go to the polls without adequate information to make an informed vote.
Mark it down. When a politician starts crying about negative advertising, he has something to hide, and does not deserve your respect or your vote.
A defendable evidence of this is the fact that GW Bush has been consistent in his refusal to answer many questions, refusal to participate in early debates and total avoidance of several legitimate queries, and is also the loudest "belly-acher" about "negative ads"
"We cannot allow federal funds to be politicized." - HUD Secretary Andy Cuomo, after announcing major changes in housing policies in support of Ms. Rodham- Clinton's "homeless" campaign against Rudy Giuliani.
"The most terrifying threat to the holiday season is not Y2K computer failure. It's Al Gore's new idea that he and Bill Bradley should have non-stop debates for the next four or five months." -Gail Collins in the New York Times
