Character Bug Bites Bush
By Chuck Baldwin
February 4, 2000

Besides the complete failure of pollsters to even come close to correctly reflecting actual voting, the salient lesson that came out of New Hampshire last Tuesday was the importance character will apparently play in this year's presidential election. Issues aside, it was the character issue that cost Bush a win in New Hampshire, and for good reason.

There are widespread reports of past cocaine use. Not helping matters is the fact that G. W. has been less than straightforward in his explanation of these rumors. A new book just published says Michael Dannenhauer, chief of staff to former president George Bush, told a Houston journalist that the younger Bush was "out of control" from the time he attended Yale University.

"There was cocaine use, lots of women, but the drinking was the worst," the aide is alleged to have said. G. W. has admitted a past drinking problem and a youth that was "reckless." These are not the best credentials for a party that wants to present itself as the wholesome alternative to the corruption of Clinton/Gore.

There are other reasons to distrust the Texas governor. Like his father, G.W. broke his own no new taxes pledge. On October 26, 1994, he said, "I am absolutely, unalterably opposed to an income tax or a sales tax increase." Bush even signed a no news taxes pledge for the Taxpayers for Accountability. The pledge stated, "I, George W. Bush, candidate for the position of Governor, pledge to oppose any legislation establishing a state personal income tax or increasing the sales tax."

Bush broke that pledge in 1997 by proposing a one-half cent rise in the state sales tax, among 57 other tax hikes. Included with his proposals was a personal income tax, the first ever for the Lone Star State. Only a determined legislature prevented Bush's proposals from taking effect.

Then there is the matter of the highway that G. W. named in honor of a notorious abortionist. John Coleman was the owner of the A - Z Women's Clinic in Houston. A prominent donor to Democratic candidates and liberal causes, Coleman was "repeatedly charged with non-payment of taxes, by city and state authorities (as well as school districts and the IRS) and faced at least 16 medical malpractice lawsuits at the time of his death.

"Fifteen-year-old Jammie Garcia died after Coleman botched her abortion just two weeks before his own death in March 1994," according to Richard Miniter, who writes for the Wall Street Journal and Reader's Digest. This is the first such honor ever given to an abortionist by any governor. Bush has never apologized.

Timothy Laird, the former president of Right To Life Advocates told Miniter, "Either he (Bush) doesn't care about the pro-life agenda or he is 'incompetent.'"

The people in New Hampshire sent a strong and clear message: we want a candidate we can trust. John McCain's war hero status and his open repudiation of establishment politics resonated with voters in a big way. Another interesting revelation is that according to New Hampshire exit polls nearly 30 percent of Republicans and nearly 20 percent of Democrats said they would consider voting for the Reform Party candidate in November.

If the character issue proves to be the deciding factor in this year's elections, it will not bode well for Bush or Gore. Both men are seen as establishment insiders with much baggage in the character department.

An Observation From the Federalist

It was Jefferson's old Democratic Party, which fought for states' rights under the Confederate flag, while Lincoln's old Republican party fought against states' rights to preserve the union. Now, Clinton's New Democratic Party candidates advocate an all-powerful central government, while Ronald Reagan's New Republican Party candidates advocate the restoration of federalism's historic context (a central government with very limited authority by today's standards). Thus, Republicans say the Confederate flag flies over the state house in Columbia at the sole discretion of the people of South Carolina, while the Democrats want to nationalize the issue. The world turned upside-down!

Another Worthy Observation

"The sum of his (Slick Willie's) farewell State of the Union address is merely the reminder that a presidency is a terrible thing to waste -- something like wasting a duck, even a lame one, on mere soup." --Wesley Pruden

And Yet Another

"When Bill Clinton and Al Gore try to claim credit for this (economic) expansion, it's like the rooster taking credit for the dawn -- and about as believable as Al Gore's claim he invented the Internet." --Jim Nicholson

Dumb Votes Kill the Process

In the New Hampshire primary, John McCain took a majority of the vote among those who called themselves liberal and among those who call themselves conservative. In fact, the only category that he did not take a majority of the vote was in the group calling themselves "very conservative". Why? Because lies and half-truths are fully accepted in a political campaign and because lying politicians will say anything to get your vote. Take that and combine it with the fact that most voters are too lazy to research the facts and you get DUMB VOTES.

Dumb votes are what puts moral deviates in the White House and in Congress and keeps them there. Dumb votes are the reason that abortion, globalism and socialism aren't stopped.

Dumb votes are why people are fed up with the political process. Politicians do not elect themselves, they just tell the lies. It is people without the character to take their vote seriously, and give it away to anyone who will tell them how to vote, that are causing the decay that they hate in politics!

New Hampshire voters who said that abortion should be "illegal in most cases" cast a majority of their votes for McCain. Just days before the vote McCain said, first it would be his daughter's choice to get an abortion if she were to get pregnant, then only back-peddled to the point of saying it would be the family's choice. This is a pro-choice stance, and yet those who say abortion should be "illegal in most cases" are supporting him! DUMB VOTES!

Of those that said moral issues were their highest priority, 47% voted for McCain, in spite of his anti-religious stance, his pro-choice beliefs and his well publicized temper and profanity. DUMB VOTES!

People, the only way our system works is for voters to vote intelligently. The vote has to reflect the concerns and opinions of the governed before we can have a government "for the people and by the people"

The best argument I have ever heard for totalitarian government was the exit poll from New Hampshire. People who value their vote so little, should not be burdened with it.
