I received an indexed Bible from my brother Bob for Christmas in 1953 which I began to read. I had just finished a book by Dr. M. R. DeHaan entitled "Signs of the Times". It explained many of the Bible prophecies of the "end times" and many of them were happening in my life time. I was amazed. I bought a set of Matthew Henry's Commentaries on the Bible and began to read extensively both the commentaries and the Bible.

One Sunday, I attended a small Baptist Church in Miami. During Sunday School, an elderly man took the adult men out under a tree and taught us about Jesus' teaching on the New Birth from the Gospel of John, chapter three. I listened intently. Here was an elderly man, who from experience, knew what he was talking about. We sat in awe. This is what I wanted, but didn't know how to get. I was too proud to let anyone talk to me about it, but oh, how I yearned to have it.

In March 1954, I was sitting in my living room, reading in the Bible, the book of Romans and things began to come together for me.

I read in chapter three, verse 23, "All have sinned and come short of the Glory of God." Well I knew I was a sinner! I had not always obeyed God's commandments.

I read in chapter five, verse 8, "But God commendeth (manifested) His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." I knew Jesus died on the cross for me and that certainly proved His love for me. He died as my substitute. He took the punishment that I deserved.

I read in chapter six, verse 23, "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." I knew I was heading for Hell and Jesus wanted me in Heaven with HIM forever, so He was offering me, as a gift, eternal life (a home in Heaven).

I read in chapter ten, verse 13, "For whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved." I thought, "Whosoever," that would include me! Then I thought, "saved from what?" "Saved from Hell, saved from the punishment of my sin!" I reasoned. It was as if a light bulb was turned on in my mind. I thought, "If I would call on Him to save me, He would do it. Now if I called on Him to save me and He didn't do it, He would be a liar, but if He could lie, there isn't any hope in anything." I knew, He couldn't lie!

So I took HIM at His Word. I got on my knees and confessed I was a sinner, and asked Him to save me (to save my soul from Hell). I further told Him, "I was by faith, trusting Him to save my soul, and I was trusting no one else, and nothing else, but only Him." A great peace came over my soul and I knew, God had just saved me. There wasn't any spooky things that happened. I didn't see any angels, I didn't see or hear a bolt of lightning, but a peace that passeth understanding flooded my soul. It was the peace of God because I had made peace with God.

I have never forgotten that glorious moment in time. I have been different ever since. God made me, in that moment, a new creation in Christ. II Corinthians 5:17 states, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature (creation): old things are passed away; behold, all things are became new

I can now say, after 44 years, It's true, It's real! THE NEW BIRTH IS THE MOST WONDERFUL THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME!

Heavenly Father, I know I am a sinner. I know Jesus died for me on the cross. I am asking Jesus to come into my heart and save me, for I am now trusting Him to save me. I am trusting no one else and nothing else, but only Him to save my soul. I am turning from my sin and the best I know how, I am going to live for You. I want to thank You now for saving my soul. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen!

My friend, if your prayer was sincere, God has saved you. I say this on the authority of God's Word.

Consider and meditate prayerfully these scripture verses:

John 6:37, "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. (In no wise means for no reason).

John 6:40, "And this is the will of Him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day."

John 3:16, "For God so loved the world (substitute your name) that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever (that includes you) believeth (means depends or trusts) in Him, should not perish but have (a present tense verb) everlasting life." A present tense verb signifies present possession.

John 5:24, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."

I John 5:13, " These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."
